New York State Enforces “Move Over Law”

Effective January 1, 2011 drivers on multi-lane highways throughout New York State are required to slow down and “move over” (when they can safely do so) giving safe clearance when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with red flashing lights. If you fail slow down and change lanes when approaching such a vehicle, you can be charged with a moving violation which carries 3 points and up to a $150 fine. On single lane roads, drivers must slow down and use caution.
